Wales High student and GB Ice hockey player, Jonas Bennett, returned from the Riga Hockey Cup in Latvia this week after competing in the men’s under-16 semi-final.

After four wins from six matches in the group stages, the GB team were beaten in the semi-final but secured third place with an impressive victory over Jelgavas LSS in the bronze-medal game.

This is the highest level of achievement by the GB team at the Riga Cup, and also a big accomplishment for Jonas, as he competed as an underage player, matching the strength, speed and intensity of players older than him.

After a rollercoaster few weeks of competitions, Jonas returned to school for his Maths and Chemistry mock exams this week. Mr Day, Head of Year 10 said: “As usual, he has handled the transition back to school life brilliantly. This was particularly impressive given the intense environment of the competition, whilst also revising for his exams”.

The league season is now coming to an end but Jonas still has several tournaments to play, including international matches in Austria and Minnesota.

Lisa McCall, Headteacher said: “It’s always a pleasure to highlight the achievements of students beyond the school community. The level of commitment and drive to reach this incredible standard in Ice Hockey, alongside his fantastic work ethic at school, is remarkable. A superb student who I am sure will continue to succeed in whatever he sets his sights on.”
