Wales High School Sponsored Walk 2022

It is that time of year again! The air is crisp, and the leaves are changing, which means only one thing: the quadrennial Wales High School Sponsored Walk is back!

The sponsored walk is a challenging 10-mile route covering the local area. All students take part, and we are aiming to raise as much as we can towards supporting Mental Health and Wellbeing at the school. We are hoping to raise up to £5000 that will be spent in school and on community events, and activities to help promote and support mental health and wellbeing.

History of the Walk

Tradition plays a key role in the life of the school. Since the school opened in the 1970s, the sponsored walk has been a part of the quadrennial school calendar.

Some alumni may remember the original route, which was 20 miles taking in the sights of Kiveton, Wales, Harthill, Thorpe Salvin, Netherthorpe, South Anston and back through to Todwick.

Recent years have seen many changes, and as we move towards a new era for the school, we are excited to build on old traditions that connect us to our school’s history and create memories and bonds that last a lifetime!

5 Reasons Why We Love the Sponsored Walk

1. Charity work is a great way for students to gain a sense of responsibility and empathy.
We believe that this not only fosters a sense of ownership but also allows young people to be creative and innovative in their thinking.

2. Past fundraisers have seen the students use funds to purchase some great assets for the School!
This has included a new minibus, refurbishing the Sixth Form and Year 11 Common Rooms, new equipment for the Grand Hall and new IT equipment such as Ipads.

3. A great way to get some physical activity!
As well as being a fun and worthwhile activity, it is also a fantastic opportunity to get some fresh air and exercise.

4. Helps to keep our environment clean.
Not only are we raising money for a great cause, but we also ask students to help pick up litter along the way.

5. It is a fantastic way to explore the local area and get to know the community better.
To ensure our students can enjoy the walk safely, we ask the whole school to take part.  In addition to this, South Yorkshire Police assist with road closures, as well as Rother Valley Country Park.

The Challenge!

The sponsored walk route is a 10-mile circular route starting at Wales High School. From there the students will walk towards Waleswood and then around Rother Valley Country Park before heading back to the school.

Students also have the option to do a sponsored run around Rother Valley Country Park instead of the walk.

Donations

Donations can come in many different forms it doesn’t have to be just money.

It may be that you can donate tinned food for the food bank, clothing for the charity shops, old uniforms for the uniform drive, or even a prom dress to help Y11 students next year!
