Remembrance Day 2024

Wales High School pays tribute to the achievements and sacrifices to honour those who fought with a special video tribute and 2-minute silence.

The whole school played an important role in helping to prepare students for the observance of the 2-minute silence in honour of those who have served and sacrificed in conflicts around the world today.

A special presentation was delivered to all students prior to the  2-minute silence at 11:00 am and a moving video tribute of the poem “For the Fallen” by Robert Laurence Binyon, (1869-1943).

Lisa McCall, Headteacher, said: “This moment of silence was important for our school community to reflect on the importance of peace, resilience, and respect.

Thank you to all staff for their support in delivering this important message to our students.

As always, we have worked together to make the moment special and provide lasting memories for our students and staff”.

For the Fallen

Poem by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), published in The Times newspaper on 21 September 1914.

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
