National Apprenticeship Week at Wales High School
Wales High School is thrilled to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week by hosting a variety of employer and educational encounters for students. These events will enhance their understanding of apprenticeships and highlight the diverse pathways available after Years 11 and 13.
Throughout the week, we will hear from some of our ex-students who are now on their apprenticeship journeys. Here’s a look at what’s coming up:
- Tuesday 11th February: Year 11 students will have the opportunity to listen to a former student who is now pursuing an apprenticeship within the NHS.
- Wednesday 12th February: Our Year 10 students studying Art, Photography, and Music will visit Grimm & Co for a Careers Panel. The panel will feature professionals such as an Engagement Assistant at Children’s Capital of Culture, a freelance graphic designer, a Community Engager at Sheffield Wednesday, and a presenter from BBC Radio Sheffield. Additionally, Year 12 will visit the University of Sheffield to learn about university and apprenticeship pathways in more detail. Also, there will be an NHS Apprenticeship Discovery Webinar at 10:00 am and British Army Apprenticeship Webinar at 1:00 pm
- Thursday is Super Learning Day 3 and some students will be visiting the University of Sheffield as well as other activities happening throughout the day.
- Friday 14th February: Our Sixth Form students will hear from a former student working in STEM-related apprenticeships within an engineering consulting company. The session will showcase the wide range of roles, from apprentices to managers, available in this sector.
One of the highlights of the week will be a special talk by Amy Smith from the University of Sheffield on Friday 14th February during Period 1 (9:10 – 10:10 am). Amy will speak with our Year 12 and Year 13 students about apprenticeships in nursing—a growing and important field for those looking for hands-on careers in healthcare. Amy will offer invaluable insights into how students can access nursing apprenticeships, sharing real experiences from current apprentices and highlighting the skills, experiences, and qualities sought by employers.
We are excited about these opportunities, especially as more students are exploring apprenticeship pathways as an alternative to traditional undergraduate degrees. We know that the Health and Social Care sector is experiencing significant demand for a larger workforce, making this session particularly relevant for our students.
National Apprenticeship Week is a fantastic chance for our students to learn about the many exciting and fulfilling opportunities apprenticeships can offer. We look forward to a week of inspiration and learning!
