The Sponsored Walk is Back!

Liz Chadwick 3 min read

It’s that time of year again! The air is crisp, the leaves are changing, which means only one thing. The Wales High School Sponsored Walk is back!

Our Sponsored Walk is a challenging 13-mile circular route around the local area, with every student taking part. This year, we are aiming to raise an incredible £25,000 towards our £300,000 Future Wales fundraising target, helping us provide new furniture, equipment and learning resources for our new school.

The 13-mile circular route starts and finishes at Wales High School.

History of the Walk

Tradition plays an important role in the life of Wales High School, and the Sponsored Walk has been part of our school calendar since the 1970s.

Some of our alumni may remember the original route, which was an impressive 20 mile trek taking in Kiveton, Wales, Harthill, Thorpe Salvin, Netherthorpe, South Anston and back through to Todwick.

While today’s route is a little shorter, the spirit of the challenge remains!

5 Reasons We Love the Sponsored Walk

1. Making a difference

Fundraising gives our students the opportunity to develop a sense of responsibility and empathy while working together towards something that will benefit their school community.

2. Supporting our school

Over the years, money raised through the Sponsored Walk has helped us purchase some fantastic assets for the school, including a school minibus.

3. Getting active

It’s a great way to get outside, enjoy some fresh air, and take on a physical challenge with friends and classmates.

4. Caring for our local environment

As well as raising money, students are encouraged to help keep the local area clean by picking up litter along the route.

5. Exploring our community

The walk gives students the chance to explore the local area and experience the community around them. The event is supported by South Yorkshire Police, St John Ambulance and Rother Valley Country Park to help keep everyone safe along the route.

The Challenge!

From school, students will head towards Waleswood before making their way around Rother Valley Country Park and then returning to school.

It’s a big challenge, but one we know our students are ready to take on!

How You Can Support Us

Every student has been given their own unique sponsorship code, allowing us to track fundraising across individual year groups and tutor groups and create a little friendly competition along the way!

If you would like to sponsor a student, simply ask them for their unique code and visit Sponsored Walk 2026 to make a donation. You can donate from just £1.

You don’t need to know a student to support us! Members of the local community and wider public can also make a general donation to our Sponsored Walk and help us reach our £25,000 target.

Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help us get closer to our £300,000 Future Wales fundraising target and help us create the best possible learning environment for the future.

Thank you for supporting our students and the future of Wales High School!
