
This qualification has been developed in consultation with higher education representatives to ensure students have the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to progress and thrive to the next steps in their learning. Within the course students will looking at human lifespan and it develops and the different professionals who may need to support someone throughout their life. The course goes into how the human body is structured and the impact of common disorders. A key element of the course is looking at the core principles, values and legislation that underpin and influence health, social care and determinants on an individual’s health status.
Many of our students go on to higher education in universities, college or apprenticeships in the Health and Social Care sector. Many of the topics and knowledge which is taught will give learners the skills and understanding that they need to go onto many possible careers in the NHS. Some of our students have gone onto degrees in nursing, social work or applied health.
All sixth form students during year 12 complete a week placement towards the end of the year. Students are encouraged to complete these in the HSC sector to help them strengthen their understanding and knowledge of the course.
5 GCSEs at 9 – 4. including English and Science.
The course is divided into four units, two externally assessed units and two internally assessed units. Across these units, learner will explore the physiology anatomy of the body, looking into how the body works and the different malfunctions which can occur. Learners will also looking into the caring sector and the different approaches which are used to support individual’s needs and requirements.
The mandatory units include:
Unit 1: Human Lifespan and Development
Unit 2: Human Biology and Health
Unit 3: Principles of Health and Social Care Practice
Students will then take one optional unit from the ones below:
Unit 4: Health, Policy and Wellbeing
Unit 5: Promoting Health Education
Unit 6: Safe Environments in Health and Social Care
Unit 7: Health Science
The exam board for this course is Pearson and it is known as the new Advanced Alternative Qualifications (AAQ’s)
