A-Level Physics is a two-year linear course culminating in terminal examinations. The practical aspect of physics is no longer assessed through coursework, but instead in exam questions within the A2 papers. Practical activities are still an integral part of the course, and students will work towards gaining a Practical Endorsement of their skills.
At the end of Y12 students are entered into the AS public exams. The outcome of this rigorous test of progress can be used to determine a student’s suitability to progress into Y13 studies. These exams also serve as good practice to complete AQA papers, with external markers, under exam conditions.
A-Level Physics is highly regarded by potential employers and universities, and it can lead to a variety of careers. Law and accountancy firms employ Physics graduates, but more typical destinations include careers and degrees in Engineering, Hardware and Software Businesses, Education, IT Consultancy, Research Associates, Systems or Data Analysis, Web Development and Medical Physics. Many students pursue degree-level apprenticeships in the above fields allowing them to get more industry experience alongside their studies.
Enrichment opportunities in Physics include: visiting speakers to discuss STEM-related careers; Isaac Physics boot camps; STEM Smart enrolment; trips to Science Live to hear notable Physicists speak about their subject; lunchtime and after school support sessions; an annual trip to CERN in Geneva, Switzerland (subject to Government guidance; roughly £350 – £450 to cover the costs of flights and accommodation).
A minimum of five GCSEs grade 9-5 with a minimum of a grade 6 in GCSE Physics and a minimum of a grade 6 in Mathematics. If Combined Science (Trilogy) was studied at GCSE, students should have achieved at least a grade 7/6.
