This A-Level is a two year qualification. You will have two examinations at A Level plus an individual fieldwork investigation of 3000-4000 words. You will study a variety of topics from both Physical and Human Geography.
Many of our students gain their highest grade in Geography and the department has a consistent 100% pass rate each year. This enables our students to seek future employment or go to University. Geography can be awarded as a BSc or a BA at University, depending on which parts of the subject are studied. As there is a focus on developing skills, Geography will open up a wide variety of opportunities for you. It is inherently multi-disciplinary in a world that increasingly values people who have skills needed to work across the physical and social sciences. Dealing with vital issues such as climate change, migration, environmental degradation, social issues and natural hazards, A-Level Geography is one of the most relevant subjects you could choose to study.
Fieldwork skills are a compulsory element of the course. This will involve conducting individual investigations with both residential and day visits. In year 12 students will attend a four day residential at Cranedale in North Yorkshire. Students will also take a visit into Sheffield to look at regeneration of the City Centre, where they will learn techniques needed to complete their individual investigations.
5 GCSEs 9 – 5, including English and Mathematics with a Grade 5 or higher in Geography. If Geography has not been studied at GCSE students will be considered on individual merit.
Students will study a range of both physical and human topics in the A Level Geography course.
Physical topics include:
• Water and Carbon Cycles
• Coastal Systems and Landscapes
• Hazards
Human topics will include:
• Contemporary Urban Environments
• Changing Places
• Global Systems and Global Governance
Students will also be expected to produce an individual fieldwork investigation (20% of the total marks) with possible opportunities for synoptic assessment.
The Examination Board for this course is AQA.
