
The Cambridge Advanced National in Applied Science is for students interested in learning about science in practical real-life contexts such as researching the fundamentals of science, planning and performing laboratory investigations or conducting a forensic crime scene investigation and analysis.
Applied Science will also help you develop independence and confidence in skills like communicating with others, researching relevant sources, presenting information and problem solving.
Students can go on to study degrees in Biomedical Sciences, Allied Health and Nursing, Life Sciences or Forensic Sciences. Students can also go on to apply for the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship as well as other apprenticeship opportunities.
5 GCSEs grade 9 – 4 including grade 5/5 or higher in Combined Science / 5 in all 3 Separate Sciences. Recommend grade 5 in Maths and English.
In year 12 you will study 2 core compulsory units:
Fundamentals of Science covers key content from Biology (Cell structure, Bioenergetics and Biodiversity), Chemistry (Atomic structure, Bonding and Rates of Reaction) and Physics (Electricity, Motion and Medical Physics).
Investigating Science teaches and applies the skills needed to plan, perform, analyse and evaluate a scientific investigation.
In year 13 you will study further core and optional units.
Science in Society is learning about the skills scientists use and the roles they perform in an international scientific community. You will examine different types of scientific data and learn how scientists use them to draw conclusions that can contribute to scientific advancement.
Forensic Biology. Topics to include: forensic biology disciplines and evidence; cells, tissues and organs in forensic biology; investigation and evidence collection; analytical techniques and evidence interpretation.
One other optional topic on either analytical chemistry or medical physics to be confirmed.
