A former Head Boy is bringing a professional theatre company to Wales High School to perform the work of teacher and playwright Jude Cole. Scott Ellis, now Artistic Director of theatre company, The Merely Players, is directing seven actors in Cole’s Last Man Standing, a play which follows 4 young men from a Yorkshire Village and their fortunes as they fight in the trenches of the Great War. The play was devised in 2005 by a group of Year 11 pupils from Wales High School, including Ellis, and has subsequently been adapted and published as a text suitable for KS3 and 4 students.
As part of Wales High School’s commemorations of the Great War, Ellis and The Merely Players have been invited to perform the play and undertake workshops for y9 and 10 students, many of whom are currently studying the text. “It will be a pleasure to see the play come home”, says teacher and playwright, Jude Cole, “It is an exciting opportunity for our current students to consider some of the issues raised by a play written by their predecessors and brought to us by one of the original cast and his talented team of professional actors.
It is both the history of our country and of our school.” Parents, friends and members of the local community are invited to see this unique performance and another play from their repertoire, Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’
Tickets can be reserved through Mrs J Cole on firstname.lastname@example.org. To book an adult ticket for both plays the cost is only £15 (concessions -students, senior citizens and groups of 5+, £6 per performance.)
