This is a full-time qualification that has been developed to meet the needs of today’s childcare workforce. Industry respected, this course bears the NCFE CACHE hallmark of excellence.
Upon achievement of this qualification learners will be able to enter the workforce as fully qualified Early Years Educators or access Higher Education. It provides an excellent base to move into youth work, early years Primary education and children’s psychology based courses.
Excellent links between the department and a wide range of local Early Years Providers enables students to successfully carry out the practical requirements for this course. A four day educational visit to Euro Disney ensures students experience the wider application of their studies beyond the classroom.
5 GCSEs 9 – 4. Applicants who do not meet these requirements will be considered on an individual basis.
• Unit 1 – Child development from conception to seven years: This unit will help you understand areas of development from conception to seven years as well as equipping you with the various skills relating to observing children and their development.
• Unit 2 – Children’s health and well-being: This unit looks at how practitioners can support children to ensure their well-being and good health.
• Unit 3 – Providing safe environments for children: This unit will develop your knowledge of child protection and safeguarding when working with children.
• Unit 4 – Child health: This unit looks at how practitioners can support children through illness.
• Unit 5 – Play and learning: This unit will provide you with the opportunity to evaluate the importance of play by planning activities within your own setting.
• Unit 6 – Understanding children’s additional needs: This unit will help you to understand the specific needs of children and how best you can support them.
• Unit 7 – Observation, assessment and planning:
This unit will provide you with the opportunity to develop your professional skills and to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical environment.
• Plus: Unit 16 – Professional practice portfolio This unit runs throughout Y12 and Y13. Students will need to produce an extensive portfolio of evidence from their time in placement which will evidence their competency when working with children.
• Controlled assessment 1 – A 5000 word assignment that is externally set and marked.
• Unit 9 – Supporting emergent literacy: This unit will help you understand how practitioners can support children with literacy.
• Unit 10 – Supporting emergent mathematics: This unit will help you understand how practitioners can support children to understand mathematical concepts.
• Unit 11 – Preparing for school readiness: This unit explains how children can best be supported when making the transition from Nursery to Infant school.
• Unit 12 – International perspectives: This unit looks at how young children are educated in different provisions across the world.
• Unit 13 – Reflective practice for professional development: This unit prepares learners to apply for positions within the early year’s sector.
• Unit 14 – Professional partnerships in early years: This unit explains the importance of working with early year’s colleagues and other professionals.
• Controlled Assessment 2 – A 5000 word assignment that is externally set and marked.

There is a requirement to be observed working competently in an Early Years setting. It is the responsibility of the student to source a work placement with children, aged 0-5 years, for two days per week in a local early years setting. You are advised to seek this placement in advance of starting in Sixth Form as local placements may well be in short supply by the start of term.
As part of the placement element of this course, it is a legal requirement that all students obtain a DBS clearance when working with children. This will be funded by Wales High School.
