Modern Foreign Languages

Curriculum, vision and aims.

It is our intention here at Wales to ensure that all students fulfil their potential in studying a language, acquiring a range of communication skills and target language knowledge. Clear communication skills are important in so many areas of everyday life and studying a modern foreign language highlights key listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills which are valuable well beyond the classroom.

Regardless of whether students continue to college, university, or employment, having some skill in another language is an asset and a skill for life. Successful MFL students are great lateral thinkers, observant and clear communicators, resilient learners and have good creativity and intuition. In MFL we do everything we can to widen students’ horizons, equipping them with transferable communication skills and an appreciation of wider world cultures.

We believe that all our students have the ability to succeed in languages no matter their previous experience or ability level and are entitled to the best support our team can offer. We regularly support students outside of lesson times and staff are always on hand for advice and help when needed.

The MFL department consists of 7 fully qualified teachers, who specialise in either French, Spanish, or both languages. We have a broad range of experience, including native speakers and staff with special interests in SEND, Mental Health and Wellbeing, and Diversity and Inclusion. Above all, we believe that learning a language is enriching and fun and our students should benefit from and enjoy their lessons, our team always strive to make this possible.
