Wales High has been in partnership with Colegio Aula Viva from Paraguay since 2004 and is the only school exchange between the two countries. To mark the 10th anniversary of this partnership, Colegio Aula Viva visited us for a week in July.
An anniversary dinner was held to which the Ambassador of Paraguay to the United Kingdom attended. A competition was held at Wales High School to design a special anniversary cake and the winning entrant helped to bake and decorate their own cake design.
The theme of this year’s Exchange was The Beatles and students from both schools sang a number of classic songs from the ‘Fab Four’ during the week. Both sets of students worked together in producing a version of ‘Paraguay and Britain has got Talent’ in which all the songs were by The Beatles.
Students from both sets of schools also visited The Beatles Museum in Liverpool.
The students from Colegio Aula Viva performed a Paraguayan dance in national costume on a number of occasions during the week and talked about many aspects of culture to the students at Wales High School.
Gareth Hughes, the International Community Director of Wales High School said ‘the week was a total success in reinforcing this unique school partnership between the UK and Paraguay and it brought cultural awareness of South American lives to many of our students for the very first time.
Many of our students have developed friendships which will remain with them for the rest of their lives’.
